Before You Start Stretching, Consult With Your Doctor!
Wrist Stretches and other exercises can increase flexibility, lower risk of injury and are usually advised to prevent or ease the pain. But if you have inflammation or joint damage in your wrists, speak with a medical professional before you do any such practices. Your wrist issues could be a part of something more serious and exercise may cause more harm to your wrists or hands. Speaking with a doctor first will help determine the cause of your wrist pain and what needs to be done to alleviate it.
At eye level – three inches away from your face – press the palms of your hands together lightly as if you were about to pray. Then, slowly, and while keeping your hands together, lower them down to the center of your body. Keep your hands in this position for at least 15 seconds, and then raise them back up towards your face. Repeat three times. The goal in mind here is to keep your forearms as parallel to the floor as possible. Don’t stretch beyond your capabilities if you feel pain or discomfort.
Wrist Flexor Stretch
Take either arm and extend it in front of you with the palm side down. Then, slowly bend your wrist upward towards the ceiling. With your other hand, gently grab the fingers of your outstretched arm and bend your wrist up farther. You want to try to keep your hand perpendicular to the floor, but, as always, don’t push past your capabilities if you feel discomfort or pain. Hold for at least 15 seconds and repeat.
Wrist Extensor Flex
This stretch is very similar to the Wrist Flexor stretch, with one difference. Again, take either arm and extend it in front of you with the palm side down. This time, slowly bend your wrist towards the floor. On the other hand, gently grab the fingers of your outstretched arm and bend your wrist farther down, trying to keep it perpendicular to the floor. Again, don’t push past your limit if you feel discomfort or pain. Hold for at least 15 seconds and repeat.
